Does Backflow Testing Price Vary by Location or Device Type?
Two different questions with two different answers. Location changes our price. Device type does not.
That is not how every tester works, so it is worth explaining.
Device type: no, it does not change the price
Atlas Backflow charges $90 per device in most of Los Angeles and Orange County, and that rate is the same across every assembly type we test:
- Double check valve assemblies (DCVA)
- Pressure vacuum breakers (PVB)
- Reduced pressure assemblies (RP / RPZ)
- Spill-resistant vacuum breakers (SVB)
- Fire line assemblies, including detector checks
An RPZ takes longer to test than a small PVB. A fire line assembly means coordinating so nobody's alarm monitoring company panics when the system goes offline for a few minutes. Both of those are real, and neither shows up on your invoice as a different rate.
We priced it this way on purpose. Most of our customers are property managers, facility managers, plumbing companies and fire protection companies with a mix of device types across a portfolio. One number is easier to budget than a matrix, and nobody has to argue about whether a particular assembly counts as high hazard for billing purposes.
The exceptions: very large assemblies, roughly 8 inch and up, and anything in a flooded vault or confined space. Those get looked at and quoted specifically, because they genuinely are a different job.

The outer-county minimum is about drive time and nothing else. A tester who spends two hours getting to a single device in Hemet has spent most of a morning on one $90 test. The $450 makes that trip work. Five or more devices at one site out there and you are effectively back at our normal rate.
Most testers will not travel to those counties at all, which is usually why people call us for them.
What actually drives cost: density
The thing that moves our economics is not the device and not really the county. It is how many devices we can test in one stop, and whether we get to build the route.
Twenty devices at one industrial campus is an efficient day. Twenty single devices scattered across five cities on dates we do not control is five inefficient half-days. Both are "twenty devices." They are not the same job.
So if you are managing a portfolio and want to talk about volume pricing, the conversation we will want to have is about scheduling. If we can route your properties into days we are already working nearby, there is real room. If we are building days around fixed dates at fixed locations, there is less.
Other things that come up
Water district filing fees
Some purveyors charge a fee to accept the test report. That is theirs, not ours, and it passes through at cost. It is normally printed on the notice you received.
Access problems
Locked enclosures with no key, alarms not put in test mode, vaults full of water. Any of those turn a fifteen minute test into a return trip. We will call you before doing anything that adds cost, and when we schedule we will tell you what needs to be ready.
Repairs
If a device fails, we quote the repair before starting. Pricing depends on the size of the assembly and what actually failed, so a small domestic device and a 6 inch fire line are not close to the same number. Our trucks carry parts for every major brand, so most repairs get done on the same visit, and re-certification is included when we do the repair.
The honest version
Backflow testing is not complicated work and it should not have complicated pricing. $90 a device in LA and OC, $450 minimum in the outer counties, filing included, no charge for the paperwork, no surprise administrative fees.
If something about your site is going to cost more, you will hear it from us before we do it, not on the invoice afterward.
Common questions
Does an RPZ cost more than a PVB?
Not with us. Same $90 per device in our core area regardless of assembly type.
Why does testing cost more in Riverside or San Diego County?
Drive time. Those counties carry a $450 minimum covering up to five devices at one site, with additional devices at $90 each. The test is identical; the travel is not.
Do I get a discount for multiple devices?
It depends on density more than count. Devices concentrated at one site, or across properties we can route together, are far more efficient to test and there is room to discuss pricing. Single devices scattered across several cities are not.
Does device size change the price?
Not for standard sizes in our core area. Very large assemblies, roughly 8 inch and up, and anything in a flooded or confined vault get quoted site-specifically.
