Where a backflow preventer sits matters as much as which one you install. Placement affects whether it actually protects the whole system, whether it survives the weather, whether it can be tested, and whether it passes inspection. Here's what goes into choosing the right spot.
Close to the water source
The assembly should be installed as near the point of entry as practical — typically just past the water meter or where the main line enters the property. This protects the entire downstream system rather than just part of it. Anything connected upstream of the device is unprotected.
Above grade, not buried
